October 2018 was the last time we would see Rodrick Covington in Once on This Island. We surprised him on his last night in his role of Ti Ti and then saw him the next night as he transformed into the sly demon of death, Papa Ge. While we loved seeing Merle Dandridge and Tamyra Gray as Papa Ge, there was nothing quite like watching Rodrick play the part.

The role of Papa Ge in the original 1990 Broadway production of Once on This Island was always played by a man. Director Michael Arden, had a new idea for the 2017 revival production. The gods could take on any gender. Merle Dandridge, cast as the revival’s opening Papa Ge, blew us away with her powerful performance of the role.
